The Jewel of the Nile

Luxor is unlike anywhere else on Earth. Built on the site of ancient Thebes — the glittering capital of Egypt's New Kingdom at the height of its power — the city is an open-air museum where colossal temple complexes, royal tombs, and riverside monuments exist seamlessly alongside the rhythms of modern life. Walking through Luxor is not sightseeing; it is time travel.

Spread across both banks of the Nile, Luxor's East Bank houses the magnificent Karnak and Luxor Temples, while the West Bank shelters the Valley of the Kings, the Valley of the Queens, and the soaring Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, carved directly into the amber cliffs. No other destination on the planet concentrates so much human history in so small a space.

3,500+ years of continuous human history preserved in extraordinary detail across the entire city
Spread across both banks of the Nile — the East Bank for the living, the West Bank for the dead
UNESCO World Heritage Site — recognised as one of the most important cultural sites on the planet

What Makes Luxor Unmissable

From the world's largest temple complex to moonlit felucca rides, Luxor offers experiences that no other destination on earth can replicate.

🏛️
Karnak Temple Complex
The largest ancient religious site ever built — its forest of 134 colossal columns in the Hypostyle Hall is simply overwhelming and unlike anything else on earth.
⚰️
Valley of the Kings
Descend into the richly decorated rock-cut tombs of Egypt's New Kingdom pharaohs, including the legendary burial chamber of Tutankhamun, glowing with vivid millennia-old paintings.
🌙
Luxor Temple by Night
Illuminated after dark, this riverside temple becomes a magical golden apparition — its statues and columns lit dramatically against the deep night sky and the glimmering Nile beyond.
🎈
Hot Air Balloon at Sunrise
Float silently above the West Bank as the sun rises over the Valley of the Kings. The panorama of temples, desert, and the winding silver Nile below is a view you will never forget.
Nile Felucca Sailing
Glide past riverside temples and waving palms on a traditional wooden felucca at sunset. One of Egypt's most timeless experiences — unhurried, peaceful, and utterly beautiful.
Sound & Light Show
Karnak's spectacular evening show narrates 4,000 years of history with dramatic light displays, theatrical projections, and narration as you walk through the moonlit temple precinct.

Before You Go

Everything you need to know to make the most of your Luxor visit — from the best season to travel etiquette and getting around.

Best Time to Visit
October through April offers cool, dry weather — ideal for long days exploring temples and outdoor activities. Avoid July and August when temperatures regularly exceed 40°C.
What to Pack
Light cotton clothing, comfortable walking shoes, high-SPF sunscreen, a wide-brim sun hat, and a reusable water bottle are essential. Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees is required at religious sites.
Local Etiquette
Remove shoes when entering mosques, dress modestly at religious sites, and always ask permission before photographing locals. A small tip for guides and drivers is customary and greatly appreciated.
Getting Around
Taxis and private drivers are the most convenient option. For a local experience, a horse-drawn calèche or a traditional felucca on the Nile adds real character. Major sites are clustered on each bank.
